October 23,
2007 -November 2, 2007 the RASD middle school celebrated National Red
Ribbon Week.
Red
Ribbon Week
is a time to educate our students and community about drug abuse and what we can
do to help. It is celebrated each year in schools across the country. Each
school promotes drug awareness by engaging their students in activities that
focus on education about the dangers of drug use and having fun without drugs.
The program was started to memorialize Kiki Camanera who was a DEA agent who
gave his life fighting the war on drugs. He was from a poor, drug infested
neighborhood and believed that one person could make a difference.
At RASD the
students made a pledge to be drug free, had crazy hat day, wore red, had a door
decorating contest with a drug free theme, wore different shoes to stamp out
drugs and brought in red labeled cans of food to be donated to the local food
banks. Friday the students sported their red ribbons to unite against drug use!
Each morning the students were provided with a fact about drug use. A fact
sheet "How To
Raise A Drug Free Child"
was sent home to parents as a means to show our support of them in raising drug
free children.
