The Rochester Area School
District's Special Education Department identifies and evaluates specific
needs of school-age students requiring special programs and services.
As required by Section 1402 of the School Code, the department conducts
screenings of a child's hearing acuity in the following grades:
Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 11th. Visual Acuity is screened
in every grade. Dental examinations are conducted upon entry in
Kindergarten and in grades 3 and 7. Physical examinations are given
in Kindergarten and in grades 6 and 7. Speech and language skills
are screened in Kindergarten and on a referral basis. New Students
are screened annually. Gross motor, fine motor, academic skills,
socio-emotion skills are assessed by classroom teachers on an on-going
basis. Specific needs from all of these screening sources are noted
within the child's official file. School records are always open and
available to parents, and only to school officials who have a legitimate
"need to know" information on a child. If you have any questions
concerning Special Educational Resources, please contact Ms. Renee Sulia
at 724-775-7500.
